Understanding the Web from an Economic Perspective: The Evolution of Business Models and the Web

    Get PDF
The advent of the World Wide Web is arguably amongst the most important changes that have occurred since the 1990s in the business landscape.  It has fueled the rise of new industries, supported the convergence and reshaping of existing ones and enabled the development of new business models.  During this time the web has evolved tremendously from a relatively static page-display tool to a massive network of user-generated content, collective intelligence, applications and hypermedia.  As technical standards continue to evolve, business models catch-up to the new capabilities.  New ways of creating value, distributing it and profiting from it emerge more rapidly than ever.  In this paper we explore how the World Wide Web and business models evolve and we identify avenues for future research in light of the web’s ever-evolving nature and its influence on business models

Psychosocial Aspects of the Performance of Strategic Alliances: A Critical Review of the Literature - II

    Get PDF
This paper presents a critical review of the strategic alliance literature, with an emphasis on the psychosocial factors involved in strategic alliances’ performance.  I argue that these have been neglected in favour of macro and meso-level theories, which tend to ignore performance-effects of micro-level behavioural factors.  The schools of thought and methodologies that have shaped the development of the strategic alliance literature are discussed along with the key success factors that have been related to strategic alliances’ performance. In conclusion, I put forth a set of recommendations for future research

    Get PDF
In recent years, e-collaboration systems have emerged as an essential enabler of communication and collaboration between enterprises. Current trends in the area of e-collaboration emphasize the importance of effective collaborative knowledge management support in e-collaboration systems. Our research aims at proposing an intelligent infrastructure for the reconciliation of knowledge management and e-collaboration systems. The objective of the paper is to introduce a conceptual framework for designing and building the new infrastructure that supports specific characteristics of collaborative knowledge management in e-collaboration systems. The paper articulates how this framework enables efficient knowledge exploration and exploitation, before concluding with implications and recommendations for future developments in this area

Making sense of strategic alliances from a managerial perspective

    No full text
Theory on alliances has largely been rooted in economic logic with a particular concern for issues at the interstice of organizations, such as those of trust and control. While economics and relational issues clearly matter, this framework is insufficiently robust to explain alliances’ formation and evolution. This is in part due to the fact that inter-organizational activity is derived from processes operating within each partner firm’s micro-context. Managerial sensemaking is at the core of these processes and represents a useful area of focus to surface overlooked psycho-sociological factors influencing decisions and actions. This view complements extant literature by highlighting the importance of managers’ behaviour in addition to macro and meso level factors, which have received a disproportionate amount of attention in explaining the development alliances.<br/
